(Professor, Kyoto Sangyo University Faculty of Sociology; Director, Kyoto Sangyo University Office of Diversity; Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University and Osaka University)

Gender equality is frequently conceived to be a female problem, but it’s also a male problem. Male problems appear as social issues throughout life, extending from childhood to retirement and beyond. There is general recognition of the need to reassess gender in Japan against the backdrop of international society, to consider male awareness and lifestyles, and to discover how men and women alike can enjoy balanced lives. As institutions that are involved with education and research, how should universities go about this redefinition of male problems?
